So many things to do, but no one to do them with. Bummer. Ha! No bummer because you could always go on fulfilling solo dates. Yes, It’s a thing! Whether single or taken, it is important that you maintain a healthy relationship with yourself, and one way of doing that is going on dates ……… with yourself.
You may be asking,
“Taking myself on a date, why in hell would I want to do that?”
“Aren’t dates for couples?”
“Wouldn’t I look weird being out on the town all by myself?”
“Are you kidding?”
We do things by ourselves all the time! We go to work, we go to the grocery store, run errands, etc. Why not use our time alone to give ourselves a well deserved treat in the name of self love and wellness?
KEY REASONS TO GO ON SOLO DATES:
It is an act of wellness There’s no need to wait on other people You can try things on your time and pace The benefit of always trying something new You get to learn more about yourself
Let’s get to the solo dates ….
DATING YOURSELF (AKA SOLO DATES) COULD LOOK SOMETHING LIKE:
SIGNING UP FOR A CLASS
This is a great way to make new friends who share your hobbies or interests. Examples of great classes to sign up for include: cooking, dance, pottery, drawing, etc. Here are a few to start you off:
If weather permits, grab your basket, fill it up with your favorite meats and cheeses, or non meat/dairy if you’re vegan + drinks …. Put on a nice flowy dress, and enjoy your solo lap of picnic luxury. For starters you can purchase a picnic kit. You could even clear your floor and have yourself an indoor picnic!
IMMERSING YOURSELF IN ART
Take a day to visit some awesome museums and exhibits in your area. Here in NYC, we have several programs that allow you to explore museums and exhibits FOR FREE! Many museums are currently offering virtual tours of their exhibits. Check them out.
(When the situation permits) For those in NYC like me, some organizations offer free museum visits:
Reserve a table for one at fancy restaurant. A quick Google search will help you find fine dining in your area; it’s as easy as typing “fine dining in (city, zip code)” or “fancy restaurants in (city, zip code)”. Give it a try. (When the situation permits)
OR COOKING FANCY AT HOME
If you’re a little too shy to dine alone, you can create your own fancy dining experience at home with a candlelit dinner for one. Try a candlelit dinner kit, or if you’re on a budget, head over to your local dollar store for your provisions:
Wine/champagne glass Cloth napkins Nice, white plates Long stem candles Candle holder
Plus, you can always find affordable wine at your local supermarket.
GOING ON A NATURE HIKE
Bask in the beauty of nature: take in the outdoorsy smell, admire the beautiful trees and their leaves, kick off your shoes for a minute and feel the grass beneath your feet …. or you can get some much needed exercise with a hike. Wear your mask.
BOOKING YOURSELF A VACATION
Why not be extra and book a whole damn trip? Who knows, you may make some new friends, or even meet a new Mr. or Ms. during your excursion. I’m not a travel blogger, but I have knowledge of a few sites for flights on a budget: (When the situation permits)
Care for some adventure? What is one daring thing you always wanted to try? Is it zip lining, sky diving, bungee jumping? OK, it doesn’t have to be THAT extreme but pick one daring thing you always wanted to do and do it! For the super adventurous, a quick Google search can help you fond things like skydiving or bungee jumping in your area. For the “not so there yets” you can try something like a trampoline park in your area.
ENGAGING IN SELF PLEASURE
Sex, but make it solo. Get yourself in the mood by creating the perfect ambiance. Light some candles, put on some soft music, rub your body with some oils, grab your favorite toy (or use your hands) and go to town on yourself. Not sure where to find the right toys? Heres a few of my fave “grown-up toy” providers:
